Abstract

This study aims to describe the mentoring process for the management of female corpses based on local religious potential in Pohijo Village, Ponorogo Regency, as well as to examine changes in participants’ understanding and practical readiness before and after the activity. The program was initiated in response to the limited number of women with adequate skills in washing and shrouding female corpses, despite Islamic provisions that emphasize the responsibility of women, husbands, or mahram relatives in carrying out these procedures. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving one local religious resource person, Mr. Suranto, and approximately 20 participants from the Yasinan Kangkungan congregation and the Muslimat women’s group in Pohijo Village. Data were collected through participatory observation and interviews conducted during the mentoring activity on Friday, 14 August 2026, at the Pohijo NU Branch Hall. The data were then analyzed descriptively. Prior to the activity, most participants possessed only general knowledge of the procedures for washing and shrouding female corpses and had no direct practical experience. The mentoring addressed the four stages of tajhizul mayyit, with demonstrations and hands-on practice focusing on the procedures of washing and shrouding. Meanwhile, the funeral prayer and burial procedures were presented through explanations due to time limitations. The results of observations and interviews showed an improvement in participants’ understanding and practical readiness following the mentoring activity. These findings indicate that mentoring based on local religious potential can serve as a relevant approach to strengthening community capacity in carrying out the collective obligation of fardhu kifayah.
