Abstract

This community mentoring program aimed to strengthen the community’s ability to read the short surahs recited during Tahlil through the improvement of Tahlil Yasin recitation in Karang Waluh Village. The program employed the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, emphasizing the optimization of local assets, particularly human resources and the community’s socio-religious potential, based on the Positive Deviance principle. The participants were members of the Karang Waluh Village community who routinely participated in Tahlil Yasin gatherings. Data and activity implementation involved observation, documentation, and direct participation throughout the mentoring process. The activities included identifying participants’ initial recitation abilities, improving pronunciation (makhraj) and tajwid, conducting guided recitation practices, and evaluating learning outcomes. The results demonstrated that the Tahlil Yasin recitation improvement program contributed positively to participants’ Qur’anic reading abilities, particularly in terms of fluency, accurate pronunciation, and appropriate application of tajwid rules. Beyond improving recitation competence, the program also strengthened Islamic brotherhood (ukhuwah Islamiyah), increased participants’ motivation to learn and practice Qur’anic recitation, and fostered social cohesion through collective religious activities. Therefore, the program can be considered an effective community-based strategy for improving Qur’anic recitation skills while strengthening religious and social values. Its sustainability is recommended to maintain the tradition of correct Qur’anic recitation and support its transmission to future generations.
