Abstract

Developing Qur'an-reading ability is an important focus of Islamic Religious Education in elementary schools. SD Negeri 03 Pagerukir, Ponorogo, holds assets in the enthusiasm of seven first-grade students and teacher commitment, though varied learning media had not been widely developed. This activity, under the Community Service Program (KPM) of Institut Agama Islam Sunan Giri (INSURI) Ponorogo, applies the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, positioning students as facilitators rather than substitute teachers. A Hijaiyah letter card medium from blue manila paper was designed with the teacher from existing school assets, then progressively developed from a letter-guessing game into a harakat-guessing game (fathah, kasrah, dhommah), complemented by singing the letters and small-group learning. This qualitative ABCD study collected data through observation, interviews with the principal and teacher, and documentation over four weeks of weekly Wednesday sessions. Results show every student increased in Hijaiyah letters recognized, from fewer than five to about twelve letters before assistance to 15–29 letters afterward, with most reaching the "Developing as Expected" category. The medium was fully handed to the teacher and school as a sustainable asset, yielding improved Qur'an-reading ability, easing students' future entry into Qur'an learning centers, and strengthening teacher capacity to design asset-based media.
