Ethno-Government: The Munirin Reje Tradition in the Gayo Community of East Aceh Regency

This study aims 1) to determine how the implementation of the munirin reje tradition in the Gayo Community of East Aceh Regency, 2) to determine the values contained in the munirin reje tradition and its relationship with ethno-government. Research on the munirin reje tradition carried out by the Gayo Community in Simpang Jernih Village, East Aceh Regency uses a qualitative research approach with a case study research type. Informants in the study amounted to 15 people consisting of 1 reje (traditional leader/village head), 1 wife reje, 2 petue (traditional figures), 1 tengku imam, and 10 community members who participated in the munirin reje. Data collection techniques used in-depth interviews, participatory observation, documentation and source triangulation. Data analysis techniques used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman consisting of data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions/verification, closed with thematic analysis. The results of the study indicate that the munirin reje tradition is a local wisdom that is practiced from generation to generation in the Gayo Community in Simpang Jernih Village. Munirin means bathing, and reje means king or village head. Munirin reje is a tradition of bathing the king and his wife in the river, attended by imams (religious leaders), traditional leaders, youth, and the community. This tradition is carried out after the king is inaugurated, usually before Eid al-Fitr, and used to be held annually. The community believes that like flowing river water, the sins of the reje and his wife flow away until they are cleansed again, like opening a new page. Before the munirin reje procession, a traditional Gayo dance is performed. Before and after the bathing, the reje and his wife are first given peusijuk by several village officials. The values of local wisdom in munirin reje include the values of hard work and cooperation in the form of social interactions between communities, religious values, and moral values.
